A safer home does not begin with panic, replacing everything you own, or trying to make a house "chemical-free." It begins with better decisions.
House of Chance uses a simple operating method: SCAN → PRIORITIZE → VERIFY → IMPROVE → MEASURE. The purpose is to help households identify practical next actions while staying honest about what the evidence does—and does not—support.
1. SCAN the home as it actually operates
Review rooms, routines, household products, ventilation, moisture, fuel-burning appliances, recent renovations, hobby materials, and other obvious sources. Start with what is present and how it is used rather than trying to memorize chemistry.
2. PRIORITIZE controllable sources first
For many indoor-air concerns, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency emphasizes source control as a primary strategy, with ventilation and filtration used where appropriate. Fixing a known leak, correcting a ventilation problem, following product directions, or removing an unnecessary source may be more useful than buying another gadget.

3. VERIFY before believing a claim
Marketing words such as “natural,” “green,” or “low VOC” should not substitute for evidence. Read the exact product label, identify the decision you are trying to make, and check whether a recognized standard applies to that exact product. For relevant cleaning and related products, EPA’s Safer Choice program provides a searchable source for products that meet its criteria.
Important: Do not mix household chemical products unless the product labels explicitly direct that combination.
4. IMPROVE one verified action at a time
The objective is not a perfect home. It is a better-managed one. Address urgent safety or professional issues first, then source control, ventilation and moisture, and only then evaluate substitutions or supplemental products when evidence and need justify them.
5. MEASURE stewardship—not fear
Do not assign your family a “toxicity score.” Track completed actions instead: what was verified, what maintenance was completed, what uncertainty was resolved, and which issues were escalated to qualified professionals.
Truth before revenue. Stewardship before fear. Evidence before authority.
